Dotonbori: Things to Do in Osaka
Located in the Namba district of Chuo ward along the canal, Dotonbori is one the most popular and touristy destinations in Osaka. You’ll know when you get there by the huge neon signs, throngs of people, many shops, and restaurants with comical signs and displays on top. Tourists flock over here for the famous street food (takoyaki, okonomiyaki, oden, etc.), shopping, and of course, posing in front of the Glico Man sign.
We visited after dusk for the neon lights and it was beyond crowded. I was utterly overwhelmed by the crowd and the chaos, so after taking pictures and tasting takoyaki, I just couldn’t anymore and was ready to get out of there. I don’t think I would want to return in the future unless there was a certain store or restaurant I absolutely had to visit.
Also, note that there is a sketchy area along the canal on the northwest side of Dotonbori that was lined with “massage parlors,” “spas,” and “love motels” with inappropriate pictures, so if you’re traveling with children, try to stay away.
